• Zika virus?

Is the Zika virus still a concern? It was all over the news for a while but now I seem to never hear about it. Has it gone away?

The news cycle sensationalizes a disease then forgets about it. Zika virus is still alive and well and widely distributed. If you are planning to travel or live where Zika is present, learn mosquito bite prevention practices. If you are pregnant or attempting to get pregnant, avoid travel to areas where Zika is transmitted.

CDC is actively engaged in surveillance of Zika virus recurrence during the upcoming spring and summer with rise in the vector (mosquitos)
Here is the information from CDC:
US States and DC: 5,676
US Territories: 37,190

I think the virus remains a concern for now and have to see how this trend unfolds in 2018-2019

Zika is still a definite concern. https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/zika-travel-information

This is a great resource for finding out where Zika transmission is active and where it has been previously.

Take care!

Thank you for the question. There is no Zika outbreak reported at present, but the virus is still in the environment, and travel precautions to endemic areas, especially for pregnant women or women who anticipate pregnancy, remain in place.
