• About my two sons with DMD?

My two sons are suffering the DMD and I have all their medical reports. I need help as both need scoliosis surgeries, and I do not want to lose them. I need to travel to one place to help them. The younger one, specifically, has curve in his back that is affecting his breathing. Please help, my sons are 25 and 20.

Thank you for reaching out. I appreciate the trust youve placed in sharing your sons situation. While neuromuscular scoliosis is not my direct area of specialization, I want to offer what guidance I can. In the context of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy DMD, scoliosis can become a critical issueparticularly when respiratory function is beginning to decline. If forced vital capacity FVC is still above 40 and the spinal curve falls in the 2040 degree range, early posterior spinal fusion is usually recommended to slow progression and preserve pulmonary function. That said, a comprehensive cardiac and pulmonary workup is critical before moving forward and should be performed at a center familiar with the surgical and perioperative challenges specific to DMD. Given your sons ages and the fact that one is already experiencing compromised breathing, I would encourage you to proceed without delay. Centers with highvolume experience in neuromuscular scoliosis and Duchenne care are best equipped to assess and coordinate the next steps. A few institutions with strong programs in this space include University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Cincinnati Childrens Hospital UC Medical Center Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia CHOP Boston Childrens Hospital Wishing you and your family strength as you navigate the next steps, and please feel free to reach out if I can be of further help. Your child needs the care and attention of an Orthopedic Pediatric Spine surgeon.

Sounds like they need to see a scoliosis specialist at Baylor Dallas; I recommend Dr. Hostin or Dr. Avramis. I hope they get the help they need and soon.

Warm regards,

You need to find an adult deformity spine surgeon in your area to evaluate your son's. This doctor is sometimes an orthopedic surgeon and sometimes a neurosurgeon. Either is fine as long as they have extensive experience in treating adults with scoliosis. I would bring all of their medical records to that appointment with that surgeon. If you are near a city that has universities, they usually have these type of doctors working at their university hospitals.
