• Can anaphylaxis or severe allergies appear out of nowhere?

My neighbor gets sudden bouts of anaphylaxis now and she believes it's triggered by peanuts. But this happened very suddenly. Is that possible or could it be something else?

Yes. It could be something else. Your neighbor should be tested for peanut allergy as well as other types of allergies including the environmental ones.
Patient also must have a blood work and PFT ( pulmonary function test) to establish the cause of these suddenly appearing anaphylactic reactions.

Yes, It is very possible. Adult onset food allergy is common and most have been eating that food for many years.

Unfortunately allergies can appear or manifest themselves fairly suddenly. Without having a detailed clinical history it is impossible to know if the reaction was related to peanuts. A lot of times the actual trigger is different than what the patient suspected so prompt evaluation by a Board certified allergist is of paramount importance to ensure safety in the future.
