I'm 40 years old, and I think I have a heart murmur. Are these life-threatening? Should I see a doctor?
Heart murmurs are abnormal heart sounds created by abnormal flow across heart valves. You should have it examined and will likely need to have an echocardiogram to see what the murmur is from.
Yes, you should see a cardiologist to find out: 1. if you have a heart murmur; 2. what is the source of the heart murmur; and 3. the severity of the heart murmur. From the cardiac ultrasound test, most of the information can be obtained.
It is not normal for a 40-year-old otherwise healthy individual to have an audible heart murmur. There are certain conditions that can cause a physiological murmur which may be normal in an adult (more so heard in conditions like severe anemia/hyper-thyroid states/pregnancy to name a few). I would recommend you see a good clinical cardiologist and undergo a physical evaluation and this MAY lead to an echocardiogram.
A heart murmur can range from completely innocent all the way to causing heart failure. You should speak to your physician who will begin by listening to your chest to try and characterize the type of murmur you may have.
