• Can a baby survive if born at 6 months?

My pregnancy is considered high-risk and my doctor thinks it best to schedule my C-section as soon as possible because my blood pressure isn't going down. Only thing is I'm only at 6 months. Can a premature baby survive if born at 6 months? I'm so nervous that I don't know what to do.

You should have a consult with a neonatologist to answer this question in detail. Survival is based on many factors Michael L Spear, MD, MSEdl Faculty Advisor, Honor Board Professor of Pediatrics Drexel University College of Medicine

Yes, baby can survive at 24 weeks, but with several problems in the NICU, prolonged stay in ICU and possibly some long-term issues. It is difficult to provide proper guidance based on the information, however, you can do the following: (1) deliver in level 3 or level 4 center, where they are used to taking care of 24-week gestation babies; (2) consider taking steroid shots with OB and neonatal advice to mature fetal lungs; (3) have your obstetrician ask the neonatologist to speak with you to advise properly.

There is chance for survival at 24 weeks, however, with significant risk for short-term and long-term major problems. Talk to your doctor and neonatal specialist about your specific situation.
