Could a painful mosquito bite be something more?

My son has a few painful mosquito bites that are bruising his skin to a purplish color. Could a painful mosquito bite be something more?

It may be an allergic reaction to the mosquito bite.

I would want to know if he’s been scratching at it. It’s likely still exactly that, a bug bite. Try some otc steroid ointment to the bites.
