• How long is my son going to stay in the hospital for his appendectomy?

My son is going to have an appendectomy soon, and I was just wondering how long would he need to stay at the hospital after the surgery?

Most children with appendicitis that has not perforated (infection stayed inside the appendix), the same day of surgery or the following day. Children with perforated appendicitis could stay from 2-7 days depending on the amount of infection outside the appendix.

In someone who is otherwise healthy, laparoscopic appendectomy is an ambulatory procedure. One can expect a discharge from the hospital in as short as a few hours after the operation, but usually not more than a day.

Most children who do not have a perforated appendix will go home directly from the recovery room. If the appendix is perforated, it can be variable; however, most go home with in 2-3 days

Typically this is day surgery or perhaps a one night stay
