• How painful is it after a hernia operation?

I'm supposed to have my hernia repaired, will the recovery from it be painful? I'm 43 years old.

Post op pain varies.

If you were having a laparoscopic hernia repair the pain should be minimal. Even with an open repair after several days the discomfort is quite manageable.

It depends. Robotic or laparoscopic hernia repairs are associated with less pain than open hernia repairs in my experience. I typically prescribe 5 days of pain medication after surgery, and very rarely get called about refills. I have had patients return to work (if it is not manual labor) within 3 days after surgery.
