• How would I know if I have diabetic dermopathy?

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes years ago, and I've always felt like I've been managing my condition pretty well. Or, so I thought. The other day, I noticed a strange pigment the bottom of my legs, and the color is almost like in patches all over the area. Progressively, it's getting worse. Could this be diabetic dermopathy? How will it be diagnosed?

This requires an examination.

Much discoloration on the lower par of the lower leg can be due to long-term veinous stasis (e.g., varicose veins, poor circulation, etc.).

It could be - are you taking minocycline or an antimalarial? Check with a dermatologist.

There are many things that you could have. It could be related to the diabetes. Or it could be related to venous disease. You need to be seen by your dermatologist.

I suggest seeing a board certified dermatologist for evaluation and treatment. There are certain conditions (such as venous insufficiency or diabetic dermopathy among others) that are common in this location.
