When undergoing spine surgery, general anesthesia is the only anesthetic approach that I have utilized and have known others to utilize. There really are no other options if the bony structures are going to be operated on.

This is contingent on the type of spine surgery.  If it is a simple procedure, such as an epidural or spinal tap, the answer is no.  If the surgeon requires input from the patient (ie. placement of a nerve stimulater) you will receive deep sedation.  If it is more involved, then you will require general anesthesia.
