• Is stent placement a surgery?

My uncle (47 years old) needs to have 7 stents placed after his heart attack. Would this be a surgery?

Stents are placed without any incisions but through a catheter placed in a blood vessel in the groin typically. Stents are not considered surgery.

Stents in the coronary arteries of the heart are performed by cardiologists. Open heart surgery is performed by cardiac surgeons.

Stent placement is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed by cardiologists and it involves introducing a small metal mesh in the heart arteries. This is not a surgical procedure and most patients can be discharged home the next day,
