• Do kidney disorders cause irritability and mood swings?

My mother has been diagnosed with a diabetic kidney disorder. She is extremely irritable these days and also suffers mood swings. Are the two related?

Yes. Most people with CKD develop depression and anxiety. It may be an underlying condition, too, but the way to help is to make sure they have a good support system, exercise and do yoga, as well as pray. If she had depression or psychosis for a long while, then she needs to be treated with medications.

Uremic encephalopathy can cause irritation, lethargy, disorientation, etc. Usually that happens when the kidney function is very low. Please check with her doctor and see what her renal function is (check bun and creatinine).
Thanks.
