My father is 76 years old and underwent knee surgery about 5 weeks ago. Can he slowly start walking now?

It depends on what kind of knee surgery he had, you should ask that and clarify with the surgeon who performed the procedure

Anytime he’s comfortable

It depends on what kind of surgery he had. Other than surgery for fractures, most surgical procedures on the knee can start walking on it right away. Patients who had a total knee replacement usually weight bear the same day as surgery. They are typically on assistive devices (walker, cane) for 2-6 weeks after surgery.

I will assume he had a knee replacement. He can walk as soon as he feels he is able.

Assuming he had a knee replacement, yes, absolutely. Start slowly and build. Walking will help build strength and improve motion. Good luck to him!
