Can my family practitioner treat my 4-year-old son?

My son is 4 years old and has a cold with a really bad cough. Can we get him treated by our family doctor or do we need to visit a pediatrician?

Most family doctors are experienced in treating 4-year-old children. If he has pneumonia or fails to improve, they may refer you to a pediatrician.
