I recently had back surgery, and have been on complete bed rest. How soon after the surgery should I resume physical therapy?

The timing for resuming physical therapy after back surgery depends on the procedure and your surgeon's recommendations. Typically, gentle therapy begins within days to weeks post-surgery to improve mobility and prevent complications. Consult your surgeon for a tailored plan, ensuring therapy aligns with your healing progress and surgical outcome.

Right away - very important to avoid stiffness and adhesions.

What kind of back surgery you have? Is it fusion? Or something else? It really depends on what surgery you have. You should ask your surgeon when you can start physical therapy.

This is a question for your orthopedic surgeon who performed the surgery.

PT usually starts soon. Once it had to be under the physician's guidance. I would recommend to contact the physician first.

You should not resume any activity until your doctor takes you off of complete bed rest. On the flip side, I have treated patients who have undergone back surgery the very next day. So, it is up to your doctor.
