• Can a shingles infection come on the buttocks and thighs?

I have an infection around my buttocks and thigh which looks like shingles. But I thought you could only get shingles on the upper body. Can shingles appear on the buttocks?

Yes, you can get Shingles (Varicella Zoster) infection in any dermatonal distribution. L5, S1, and S2 dermatones involve the buttocks and lateral to posterior thighs.

Shingles can reactive anywhere on the body. It lays dormant in the doral root ganglion of your spinal cord and can come out anywhere. Shingles should prompt a presentation to the doctor though as it can be treated with antivirals and you may be a candidate for vaccination.

Shingles can appear on any part of the body, it is unilateral as it follows the nerves paths.

You can get shingles in your thigh if it follows a dermatome or a nerve track from your spine. Most lesions in your gluteus are caused by herpes simplex, especially if it is recurrent. Shingles can be confused many times with herpes simplex.
