I am a 45 year old female. I was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy. What are the treatment options?
Treat your diabetes
Treatment will depend on the severity of diabetic retinopathy. The nost important thing is to control blood sugar levels. Treatment can include laser, medication, or surgery.
The treatment options are blood sugar control, injections into the eye, and laser treatments.
The treatment optios for diabetic retinopathy (DR) are many and depend upon the extent of the DR, the control of the diabetes, the length of time you have had diabetes, and what you take to control the diabetes. Hence, this question is not answerable without those answers. Sorry.
The absolute best way to control diabetic retinopathy is to keep your blood sugar as steady as possible (avoid highs and lows). If you develop macular edema or moderate non-proliferative (or worse) or proliferative retinopathy, you will require eye injections and/or laser treatment.
The first and most important step is to control blood glucose. Next, depending on the level of diabetic retinopathy (presence or absence of bad vessels that can bleed) and presence or absence of swelling of macula (the center of the retina), there are lasers and intraocular injections of different medications that can help treat and stabilize the retina. You will need a retina exam with a retina specialist to define a treatment plan.
Best!
Laser photo coagulation is the classic method. Now intravitreal injections with lucentis and eyelea are used regularly
Mostly laser, or injections in the macula, depends on the type and stage of retinopathy m.
Blood sugar control, laser eye treatments, Anti VEGF eye injections
Early diabetic retinopathy does not require treatment. Best treatment is prevention by controlling blood sugar. More advanced retinopathy may require laser or injection of medication. Close monitoring with an ophthalmologist is key.
