• Why did my cyst rupture 8 months after cyst removal?

I had an epidermal cyst removed last year, but 8 months after my removal I had a cyst rupture and I needed emergency surgery. Why would this happen if the cyst was removed?

These are called hemorrhagic cysts. They develop after the procedure.

Your cyst was not removed the first time, It was only drained

Recurrence is a possible complication of cyst removal.

If some of the sac was left behind, the cyst can recur. If the cyst has ruptured or was infected before, it can be difficult to excise the whole sac intact so the possibility of leaving some remnants of the sac behind is high.

This could happen if the entire cyst was not removed.

Recurrences of cysts can happen even under the best of circumstances. Your cyst has likely recurred and ruptured.
