It prevents neural tube defects in early pregnancy development
To prevent birth defects and miscarriage.
Folic acid deficiency in early pregnancy might lead to some form of congenital anomalies called neural tube defect. Giving folic acid early in pregnancy during the first trimester might prevent that anomaly.
