• My son is passing deep yellow urine. Could it be an issue of the liver or the kidney?

For the past 4 days my son who is 9 years old has been passing deep yellow urine. I am not sure which doctor to consult. Should I see a nephrologist or could it be an issue connected with the liver?

Drinking a lot of water is going to change urine colors.

Do a UA and talk to your doc

See your primary care doctor and get both urinalysis and comprehensive metabolic panel checked. That will check both kidneys and liver to confirm if there is an issue.

Hi,

In a healthy child, yellow is usually a sign of dehydration. I would have him drink more water. But look at the white part of his eyes and his skin: if they show yellow, then it’s a sign of liver injury or hepatitis and you should see a pediatrician or pediatric hepatologist (liver specialist).

It may be due to jaundice. Please see a pediatrician or a general physician first and go from there.

If he does not have any liver disease, then he can consult a nephrologist. But a primary doctor can guide more as he should have his medical record.
