Is it Okay for Caregivers to Tell Little White Lies to an Alzheimer's Patient?
Some alternatives to lying: Changing the subject and Acknowledge your loved one's emotion
If you feel strongly about telling little white lies, you might want to try these strategies:
- Change the subject. Redirect to a new topic and ignore the questions.
- Listen for the emotion that is causing the patient to ask a question. Acknowledge the feelings that lie behind the questions. For example, if the patient is angry or stressed, acknowledge these feelings. Ask them what is wrong and talk to them calmly.
