- Don’t be negative. If you say, "you are driving me crazy," it will only cause problems.
- Use their first name or say “Mom” or “Mother” “Dad” or “Father.” Let them know who they are even if they don’t remember you.
- When conversing with someone with Alzheimer’s, eliminate distractions.
- Try not to interrupt them. Correcting what they say will have no impact except to make them angry.
- Avoid talking about your loved one as if they were not in the same room with you. You never know, they may understand more than you think.
- Focus on feelings rather than words.
- Avoid baby talk.
- Stay calm.
