The Gender Gap in Handling Stress and Diabetes

The difference in susceptibility to depression

Another related factor that explains the difference in how the two genders deal with diabetes is women’s susceptibility to depression as compared to men. In a study that’s mentioned on the Mayo Clinic website, approximately 20% of women develop depression at some point, and they are twice as likely as men to be living with depression. Now given that fact that some of the symptoms of depression include loss or increase in appetite, sleep problems, lack of energy, and physical pain, it’s no wonder that depression can often lead to the onset or the worsening of diabetes. Nevertheless, this situation is the reason why management of this condition is extremely important.
