Get to know Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist Dr. Mollie Ann McDonnold, who serves patients in Austin, Texas.

A board-certified and fellowship-trained maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Dr. McDonnold is in practice at Austin Maternal-Fetal Medicine, working with patients at their Renfert Way office.

“I have a love for helping and educating women through one of the most important and special times of their lives - pregnancy. I enjoy the challenge and complexity of taking care of two patients together, mother and baby, and am passionate about working with every woman to achieve a healthy pregnancy. Like many women, I have also experienced two high risk pregnancies. I've also experienced all the worries that come with your newborn baby being taken to the NICU, and the joy when I was finally able to take them home” expressed the doctor.

After graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Chemical Engineering and a degree from Plan II, she received her medical degree from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. During her education, she developed a passion for improving women's health care that led to a career in obstetrics and gynecology.

Subsequently, Dr. McDonnold moved to Providence, Rhode Island to continue her medical studies at Brown University, Women and Infants Hospital, where she completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Her desire to further understand why complications of pregnancy develop and ultimately how to prevent and treat them, led her to further specialize in maternal-fetal medicine. Eventually, she returned to Texas where she completed her fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), she is board-certified in maternal-fetal medicine and obstetrics & gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The ABOG is a non-profit organization that provides board certification for practicing obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States and Canada.

Professionally, Dr. McDonnold is a proud member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine.

An avid researcher, she has pursued research in the field of preeclampsia, including disease development, methods of prevention, and long term effects of maternal preeclampsia on children. She has authored several scientific papers and presentations, and has received recognition for outstanding research from the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Her interests also include maternal medical disease in pregnancy and preterm labor.

Maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology that focuses on managing health concerns of the mother and fetus prior to, during, and shortly after pregnancy. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are physicians who subspecialize within the field of obstetrics. For pregnant women with chronic health problems or other complications during their pregnancy, MFM specialists work to keep them as healthy as possible while their bodies carry a pregnancy. They also care for women who face unexpected problems that develop during pregnancy such as early labor, bleeding or high blood pressure.
