Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Brenda Myers-Powell, who serves patients in Federal Way, Washington.
Recognized as America’s Top Ophthalmologist year after year, Dr. Myers-Powell specializes in uveitis (ocular inflammation) and vitreoretinal surgery. She has accomplished a successful blend of academia and private practice through consultation and teaching which has enhanced her expertise. After practicing for more than eight years in the Northwest, she now dedicates herself to her vision of ‘Compassionate Excellence Always’ as the owner of Retina Specialists Northwest, PLLC in Federal Way, Washington.
Delivering compassionate excellence in retinal and inflammatory eye disease always, she and her staff utilize the latest technology as well as clinical expertise to diagnose and manage all retinal and inflammatory disorders with particular attention to: diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular disease, macular edema, retinal tear and detachment, disorders of the vitreous, macular holes, scleritis, and vision-threatening uveitis.
Having devoted her career to the advancement of patient care, Dr. Myers-Powell had an early start in clinical science research as a Junior Fellow at the prestigious National Institutes of Health while attending Johns Hopkins University for her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. Her subsequent appointment to the Medical Scientist Training Program at renowned Washington University School of Medicine led to graduate studies in immunology that sparked a love for retinal disease management. She finished her MD PhD studies and then pursued her residency in ophthalmology at the University of Texas at Houston’s Hermann Eye Center.
Following completion of her first fellowship in medical retina and uveitis at the esteemed National Eye Institute, Dr. Myers-Powell took a position at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, knowing that diabetic and inflammatory eye disease continue to cause blindness disproportionately in the Native population compared to the remainder of America. There, she co-developed the Indian Health Service Tele-ophthalmology Program for the diagnosis and management of diabetic and other eye diseases. She was quickly promoted to Section Chief of Ophthalmology during her two-year tenure. She later accepted a preceptorship and associate position in vitreoretinal surgery with a busy Northwest vitreoretinal practice for four years.
While practicing vitreoretinal surgery and uveitis full-time, she also developed and supervised a Uveitis Service for the University of Washington as well as a retinal and uveitis consultation service at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. Dr. Myers-Powell briefly relocated to the East coast for two years prior to returning to the Northwest to provide retinal services for a multi-speciality ophthalmology group. After four years, she opened Retina Specialists Northwest, PLLC in 2013.
Realizing her dream of compassionate excellence in retinal care, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.
With numerous publications in both basic and clinical science, Dr. Myers-Powell continues to participate in academic endeavors such as teaching and participating in clinical trials; however, her true love remains patient care. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, as well as many other local and state ophthalmology and medical societies.
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
On a more personal note, Dr. Myers-Powell enjoys reading, golfing when possible, and relaxing with friends. She is exceptionally proud of her son, Lorenzo Brendan, who has lent his expertise to Retina Specialists Northwest, PLLC while preparing for graduate school.
