Get to know Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist Dr. Joshua F. Nitsche, who serves patients in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

A board-certified and fellowship-trained maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Dr. Nitsche is in practice at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, an affiliate of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is a pre-eminent academic health system based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and part of Atrium Health Enterprise. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist’s two main components are an integrated clinical system – anchored by Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, an 885-bed tertiary-care hospital in Winston-Salem – that includes Brenner Children’s Hospital, five community hospitals, more than 300 primary and specialty care locations and more than 2,700 physicians; and Wake Forest School of Medicine, the academic core of Atrium Health Enterprise.

Graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree from Washington and Lee University in 1996, Dr. Nitsche earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) and medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2002 and 2004, respectively. He then went on to complete his residency in obstetrics and gynecology and his fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the Mayo Medical Center in 2008 and 2011, respectively.

Following his training, the doctor attained board-certification in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

Among his professional affiliations, he is an active member of the Association of Professors of OB/GYN, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Council of Fellowship Training in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Active in academia, Dr. Nitsche serves as an Associate Professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology that focuses on managing health concerns of the mother and fetus prior to, during, and shortly after pregnancy. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are physicians who subspecialize within the field of obstetrics. For pregnant women with chronic health problems or other complications during their pregnancy, MFM specialists work to keep them as healthy as possible while their bodies carry a pregnancy. They also care for women who face unexpected problems that develop during pregnancy such as early labor, bleeding or high blood pressure.
