Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. George Kartalian Jr., who serves patients in Virginia.

Dr. Kartalian has been practicing orthopaedic surgery since 1997 with a specialization in foot, ankle, knee, and lower extremity sports medicine. He sees patients at Town Center Orthopaedic Associates, P.C. in Reston and Centreville, Virginia. He relocated from Texas where he served as team physician for professional hockey and arena football teams.

As a foot and ankle specialist, Dr. Kartalian treats a variety of problems including flat feet, bunions, ankle sprains, tendonitis, and arthritic conditions. In addition to foot and ankle problems, his practice treats lower extremity disorders of the knee, hip, and lower leg. He specializes in treating and preventing athletic injuries by emphasizing functional training and evaluating gait and shoe wear. When conservative therapies fail to relieve pain, he uses the latest surgical techniques, including arthroscopy and minimal incision surgery, to treat the problem.

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo in New York. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago, and his foot, ankle, and lower extremity fellowship at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

Following his training, he became board-certified through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, which is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons. 

Orthopaedic Surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. They work in clinical and hospital settings.

Outside of the office, Dr. Kartalian enjoys golfing, biking, playing squash, and spending time with his wife and three children.
