Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Nathan M. Mollberg, who serves patients in Michigan.

As a fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Mollberg specializes in thoracic oncology and has special interests in lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mediastinal tumors, VATS lobectomy, and minimally invasive esophagectomy. With a patient-centered approach to care, he tries not to focus on the particular disease, but what the needs of the patient are as a whole.

Striving to advance the health of his community, he sees patients at Bronson Cardiothoracic Surgery Specialists – Kalamazoo & Bronson Cardiothoracic Surgery Specialists – Battle Creek in Michigan. Both hospital facilities are a part of Bronson Health. 

Alongside the doctor’s clinical role, he serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor within the Department of Surgery at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine in Kalamazoo.

With a strong desire to help people, Dr. Mollberg had a family member who went through surgery for cancer, which drove him to become a physician. He was moved by how much impact the surgeon had not just on his family member, but the family as a whole.

Following the completion of his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2006, he served his residency in general surgery at the University of Illinois at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago. During this time, he took a year break to complete a research fellowship in molecular oncology with the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Thereafter, he completed a residency in cardiothoracic surgery with the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, which is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest. 

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs. 

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Mollberg enjoys tending to his farm and hanging out with his family. He speaks English, Czech, Portuguese, and Spanish.
