Dr. Michael Marohn, DO, has been a distinguished member of the surgical team at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland since January 2004. With a career spanning over two decades dedicated to pushing the boundaries of emerging surgical technologies, Dr. Marohn has established himself as a leader in the field.

Recruited by Dr. Julie Freischlag to join Johns Hopkins following his illustrious tenure as a USAF Colonel and Vice-Chair of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Dr. Marohn brought a wealth of experience and expertise to the renowned institution. During his time at Johns Hopkins, he succeeded Dr. Mark Talamini as the MIS Fellowship Program Director for 7 years, and directed the Minimally Invasive Surgery Training & Innovation Center (MISTIC) for a decade while maintaining a busy advanced MIS surgical practice, focusing on foregut, hindgut, and solid organ problems, including robotic surgery.

Dr. Marohn’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Dartmouth College, followed by pre-medical studies at Indiana University and Dartmouth College. He then pursued his medical education at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University.

Later, Dr. Marohn undertook a surgical residency at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium from 1979-1985. Subsequently, he pursued a fellowship in surgical critical care at the same institution from 1981-1982.

A board certified surgeon in general surgery and surgical critical care, Dr. Marohn holds the distinction of being a Diplomate of the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. His professional affiliations include memberships in prestigious organizations such as the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. 

A true pioneer in the field, Dr. Marohn is committed to collaborative innovation and leveraging technology to enhance patient care and safety. His global health initiatives have seen him utilize laparoscopy as a development tool in various countries, including Peru, China, Mongolia, Moldova, Korea, and elsewhere.
