  • Can crossed eyes be corrected?

Crossed eyes should be fixed very early in life otherwise there is good chance the child will not have good vision in one eye and may never develop good depth perception. • Can an ophthalmologist write medication prescriptions?

The terms Ophthalmologist, Optometrist, Optician, and Ocularist each have different meanings in the USA. An ophthalmologist is a doctor of medicine (MD or DO) who has to complete 4 years of medical school and 4 years of post medical school training. He or she can perform surgery and write Rx for any medication he/she can feel comfortable with. Optometrists complete 4 years of optometry training and are not allowed by law to write for any drugs except those allowed by the state licensing board and often restricted to a few categories (infection and glaucoma in some states). They are also not permitted to perform surgery. Opticians are licensed to fit glasses or contact lenses but are not permitted to treat disease of the eye. Ocularists are licensed to make artificial eyes for people who have lost an eye or have an unsightly eye. READ MORE

  • My vision is a bit hazy since yesterday. Should I get it checked?

Yes. It's like asking, "I have chest pain," or "I am dizzy," or "I have blood in my stool," or "I have pain in my right ear," etc. Blurred vision is usually a sign of something serious and should most definitely be "checked out," if you care about your vision. READ MORE

  • How can I avoid glasses?

If you see well enough to do all your activities, then that's great. People who have good vision usually will need reading glasses when they get to around age 40-50 depending on their measurements. You can do all the exercise and eat all the right foods but you will still need to wear glasses for reading. Contact lenses, laser surgery or even lens exchange are ways of reducing dependence on glasses. It's nature's way of reminding you of your age. READ MORE

  • Bilateral cataract surgery

Traditionally, bilateral, same day sequential cataract surgery has not been done due to the remote chance of infection. But with risk of infection now approaching (but not quite) zero, some doctors are performing them on the same visit. Also, in cases where a patient (elderly, children, uncooperative) needs to be place under general anesthesia, the risk of complications from same day bilateral surgery is probably less than the risk of anesthesia complications. "Simultaneous bilateral surgery" would be difficulty unless you have two surgeons operating on you at the same time!! READ MORE

  • At what age is surgery recommended for squint eye?

There are a lot of considerations before this question can be answered. Is the problem "cross eye" or "wall-eye?" Is it there all the time or sometimes? Is there evidence of "suppression" or "amblyopia?" In some cases, the surgery should not be delayed. In others, there are non-surgical treatments that can buy time until surgery is performed.
