Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgeon Dr. Alvaro O. Mercado, who serves patients throughout the State of Illinois.

Dr. Mercado is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist and minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon with over 35 years of experience. 

Operating from his private practice in Chicago, Illinois, he is closely associated with Northwest Community Day Surgery Center, Northwest Community Hospital, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, and Ascension Resurrection. 

His clinical focus encompasses robotic surgery (Da Vinci Platform), pelvic pain, pelvic surgery, and minimally invasive gynecologic procedures. Prenatal care is a cornerstone of his professional dedication.

Graduating with his Medical Degree from Faculty of Medicine at Higher University of San Andrés in 1979, Dr. Mercado went on to further his training in the United States. He performed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center of Chicago from 1981-1983, and an additional residency at Pontiac General Hospital from 1985-1988.

A distinguished Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), Dr. Mercado holds Diplomate status with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The ABOG is a non-profit organization that provides board certification for practicing obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States and Canada.

Obstetrics and Gynecology is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology. An obstetrician-gynecologist, or OB-GYN, is a healthcare professional who specializes in female reproductive health.

Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS) is recommended for a wide range of conditions including fibroids, ovarian cysts and endometriosis. Performed by surgical specialists, these advanced procedures heal more quickly and carry a lower risk of infection.
