Get to know Radiation Oncologist Dr. Igor J. Barani, who serves patients in Phoenix, Arizona.

A radiation oncologist, Dr. Barani specializes in the treatment of brain and spine tumors and in the applications of radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, and brachytherapy. 

Currently, he serves as the Director of the Division of Neuro-Radiation Oncology, Associate Professor, and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. He is also a Director of the Barrow Artificial Intelligence Center (BAIC), where he is exploring applications of big data analytics and artificial intelligence to improve patient outcomes. 

Previously, he held the position of CEO and Chief Medical Officer at an award-winning artificial intelligence company in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is using this experience to scale the benefits of this novel technology across the entire Dignity Health Enterprise.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Barani graduated with his medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He then went on to perform his internship at Yale New Haven Hospital Saint Raphael Campus, his residency in radiation oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, and a research fellowship at Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

With years of experience, he is board-certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The mission of the ABR is to serve patients, the public, and the medical profession by certifying that its diplomates have acquired, demonstrated, and maintained a requisite standard of knowledge, skill, and understanding essential to the safe and competent practice of diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.

For nearly 10 years, Dr. Barani was on faculty in the Radiation Oncology Department at the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF). He served there as vice-chair and director of clinical research from 2010 until 2015. 

His current research studies explore various applications of big data analytics and artificial intelligence with the aim of improving outcomes for brain tumor patients and making clinical workflows more efficient. As a co-investigator at the Ivy Brain Tumor Center, Dr. Barani is a key member of the Phase 0 clinical trials team and an experienced early-phase clinical trialist in neuro-oncology.

Among his professional affiliations, he is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society for Radiation Oncology, the Radiological Society of North America, and the Society for Neuro-Oncology.

Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that involves the controlled use of radiation to treat cancer. It is one of the three primary specialties, the other two being surgical and medical oncology, involved in the treatment of cancer.
