Get to know Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physician, Dr. Jeffrey R. Johnson, who serves patients in Detroit, Michigan.

Dr. Johnson is a remarkable maternal-fetal medicine physician practicing at Hutzel Women’s Hospital at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. Moreover, Dr. Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dr. Johnson specializes in maternal – fetal medicine/high-risk pregnancies, fetal ultrasound, fetal surgery, and prenatal diagnosis.

“The population that is served here is similar to the population that I served while a resident in Boston. It gives me the opportunity to bring me back to the foundation of why I do what I do, and is a reality check for me. I also enjoy the wide variety of types of patients in the Detroit area, and love learning about a completely different immigrant population than what I was exposed to in New England. Teaching is so important to me as I get the opportunity to give back what I have gotten from so many other mentors in my life that have given to me. I teach every year at an OB Gyn Board Review course in Columbus Ohio for Ohio State University, and have gotten several resident teaching awards including at SUNY Buffalo Chief Resident Faculty Excellence Award in 2015”, says Dr. Johnson. 

Dr. Johnson is a 1993-graduate of the Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts. He remained at BUSM for his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology (1993-1998). He then joined the Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, for his fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine (1998 – 2001). Prior to medical school, Dr. Johnson obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a Master of Arts degree in Medical Sciences from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. 

Following the completion of his formal training, Dr. Johnson became board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and the sub-specialty of maternal-fetal medicine by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The mission of the ABOG is to define standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

Maternal-fetal medicine, also known as perinatology, is a branch of medicine that focuses on managing health concerns of the mother and fetus prior to, during, and shortly after pregnancy. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are physicians who subspecialize within the field of obstetrics.

A Fellow American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), Dr. Johnson is licensed to practice in the states of Michigan and New Hampshire. He maintains a hospital affiliation with DMC Harper University Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Detroit Receiving Hospital, Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, Karmanos Cancer Center, and Sinai-Grace Hospital.

Outside his professional commitments, Dr. Johnson enjoys canine agility competitions. His dog, an Entlebucher, has her first two titles in AKC agility, and they are working towards the advanced levels. He is also an avid photographer, and has had a couple of small showings.
