Get to know Internist Dr. Gian Varbaro, who serves patients in Paramus, New Jersey. 

With over two decades of experience as a board-certified internist and a physician executive at the forefront of healthcare innovation, Dr. Varbaro has consistently spearheaded the development and launch of new programs, breathed new life into existing systems, and enhanced the quality of care, all while creating significant value for hospitals and healthcare systems.

Since 2018, he has excelled in the role of Chief Medical Officer at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center where his leadership has propelled the institution to become an award-winning, comprehensive destination hospital. In 2022, Dr. Varbaro assumed the additional responsibility of Vice President of Ambulatory Services, cementing his administrative presence within the Medical Center. 

In this dual role, he oversees the entire medical staff, ensures the maintenance of high standards in care quality and patient safety, and expertly manages non-clinical operations, including outpatient and offsite services.

Extending his reach and applying his esteemed skillset, Dr. Varbaro also serves as the Chief Medical Advisor to Bergen County, New Jersey, holds the position of Medical Director for all public health programs, contributes to the community as a Trustee for the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative Board, and is an Assistant Professor within the Department of Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Regarding his educational history, Dr. Varbaro obtained his Medical Degree from NYU Grossman School of Medicine in 2000. Subsequently, he completed his residency in internal medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center from 2000 to 2003. Later, in 2013, he successfully earned a Master of Business Administration Degree from Yale School of Management.

Board certified in internal medicine, the doctor is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being.

The recipient of numerous accolades, Dr. Varbaro earned the titles of Physician of the Year in 2022 and HealthCare Hero from NJBIZ for his unwavering commitment to addressing healthcare disparities rooted in factors such as race, gender, and financial circumstances. Additionally, a special Congressional Recognition Award from the United States House of Representatives designated him a Coronavirus Hometown Hero for New Jersey District 5 in 2020, acknowledging his exceptional efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Notably, under his clinical leadership, the Lown Institute ranked Bergen New Bridge Medical Center first in the state and second in the nation for its outstanding impact on the community.

As the inaugural member of his family to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Varbaro attributes his parents’ support as instrumental in affording him valuable opportunities for both academic and professional growth.
