Throughout his academic career, Dr. Ukponmwan earned his medical degree from the University of Benin – College of Medical Sciences in Nigeria in 1979. Wanting to further his education, he relocated to the United States. There, he obtained his Master of Public Health degree and his Master of Science degree in Population Science from the prestigious Harvard School of Public Health in 1983 and 1984, respectively.
Thereafter, he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Harlem Hospital Center, which is a major teaching hospital affiliate of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He opened Yonkers Nephrology in 1991 as a solo practice after completing his training in nephrology and hypertension at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
The doctor is board-certified in nephrology and hypertension by the American Board of Internal Medicine, which is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
In order to stay up to date in his field, he remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Society of Nephrology, and the Renal Physicians Association. He also holds the title of Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
