Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Osahon Ukponmwan, who serves patients in Yonkers, New York.

Committed to delivering the highest quality care in order to help patients achieve an optimum level of health, Dr. Ukponmwan founded Yonkers Nephrology in 1991. Located in Yonkers, New York, the practice specializes in hypertension management and kidney treatment, including all types of renal replacement therapy.

Serving as the Medical Director of Davita – Yonkers Dialysis Center and USR- Pelham Parkway Dialysis Center (Home Program), Dr. Ukponmwan’s responsibilities include planning, organizing, conducting, and directing the professional ESRD services. He also has admitting privileges at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers, Saint John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, and Montefiore – Mount Vernon Hospital.

Among his committee appointments, he is a member of the Divisional Council at Montefiore Medical Center (July 2013 – present), a member of the Credentials Committee at Montefiore Medical Center (July 2007 – present), and a member of the Medical Board at St. Joseph’s Medical Center (2004 – present). 

As for his academic rank, he has been serving as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx since 1991. He has taught various times at St. Joseph’s Medical Center and at Montefiore Medical Center. 

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Ukponmwan earned his medical degree from the University of Benin – College of Medical Sciences in Nigeria in 1979. Wanting to further his education, he relocated to the United States. There, he obtained his Master of Public Health degree and his Master of Science degree in Population Science from the prestigious Harvard School of Public Health in 1983 and 1984, respectively. 

Thereafter, he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Harlem Hospital Center, which is a major teaching hospital affiliate of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He opened Yonkers Nephrology in 1991 as a solo practice after completing his training in nephrology and hypertension at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

The doctor is board-certified in nephrology and hypertension by the American Board of Internal Medicine, which is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

In order to stay up to date in his field, he remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Society of Nephrology, and the Renal Physicians Association. He also holds the title of Fellow of the American College of Physicians. 

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care when the time comes. 

Active in the community, Dr. Ukponmwan was the proud sponsor of Bryn Mawr Boys and Girls Club, Yonkers for many years. He has also served as a Principal Investigator in multiple clinical trials, as well as has lectured and conducted presentations on various topics relating to his field.
