A skilled allergist & immunologist, Dr. Mekia is the Director of Metro Asthma and Allergy Centers LLC, with office locations in Mitchellville, Maryland and Washington, D.C. He treats patients presenting with skin, pollen, vaccine, animal, food, and drug allergies, rhinitis, hives, rashes, and other allergic conditions. He also administers allergic shots and conducts testing.
The goal at the Metro Asthma and Allergy Centers is to help patients who suffer with asthma and allergies and their families understand their disease, become more compliant with their treatment and customize the management of their disease to their individual conditions.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Mekia received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry and Biology from the Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1978, and graduated with his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada in 1983. He was a Postgraduate Physician specializing in pediatrics and child health at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC in 1986, and completed his fellowship in allergy & immunology at Howard University in 1988.
Certified as a Licensed Physician and Surgeon in Maryland and the District of Columbia, the doctor is board-certified in allergy and immunology by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI). The mission of the ABAI is to improve the quality of medical care by the development and utilization of professional and educational standards for the initial certification and maintenance of certification of physician specialists in allergy and immunology.
Distinguished as a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP), Dr. Mekia is a proud member of the American Medical Association, the District of Columbia Medical Association, the Maryland Medical Association, and the American Academy of Allergy And Immunology.
In his professional experience, he worked as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Howard University School of Medicine from 1988-2001, was the Attending Physician at the Allergy and Immunology Clinic at D.C. General Hospital from 1991-2001, and the Attending Physician of The Asthma and Allergy Center of Southern Maryland, in Clinton, Maryland from 2000-2011. He opened his practice, Metro Asthma and Allergy Centers, in 1990.
