Get to know Cardiologist Dr. Anthony W. Clay, who serves patients in Delaware. 

Dr. Clay is a board-certified cardiologist, who has a special interest in consultative cardiology, as well as echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, CT angiography, and congenital heart disease. After practicing for seven years in Philadelphia, he joined Cardiology Physicians, P.A. in 2003. 

With offices in Newark and Wilmington, Delaware, Cardiology Physicians, P.A. consists of eight cardiologists who strive to provide the highest quality of cardiovascular services in the state of Delaware and its surrounding areas. They understand that quality care begins with the relationship between the patient and his or her health care provider, which is why they are committed to supporting that relationship, by providing the resources needed to make informed decisions about one’s heart health care. They also offer a full range of cardiovascular diagnostic testing, including exercise and pharmacologic stress testing with nuclear imaging, diagnostic cardiac ultrasound, as well as stress testing with echocardiographic imaging.

With strong interests in teaching, Dr. Clay also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Hahnemann University and as an Instructor of Medicine at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has taught hundreds of medical students and has been a lecturer at national conventions regarding congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease. 

Throughout his academic career, he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Villanova University. He then went on to attend medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He did his internal medicine training at Hahnemann University where he was awarded the Resident of the Year award and served as Chief Resident of the Internal Medicine Program. He remained at Hahnemann University for his fellowship training in cardiology and served as Chief Cardiology Fellow there.

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the doctor is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Delaware Medical Society, the American College of Physicians, the Philadelphia County Medical Society, the Delaware County Medical Society, and the American Heart Association. What’s more, he has served as Chairman of the Physician’s Fund Raising Committee for the American Heart Association – Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter. 

Among his many achievements, Dr. Clay is board-certified in both internal medicine and cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Non-invasive cardiologists focus on the detection and treatment of heart disease, using external tests, rather than instruments inserted into the body, to evaluate and diagnose cardiac disorders.

Dr. Clay was born in Delaware County and is one of ten children. He was married in 1987 and lives with his wife, Bernadette. They have three sons, Anthony, Luke, and Blase. When he is not working, the doctor enjoys all sports, especially coaching and playing basketball, rowing, and scuba-diving. He also enjoys reading, watching movies, and traveling.
