Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Michael Hellman, who serves patients in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Dr. Hellman is a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement, as well as open hip preservation surgery. He is in practice with Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists, which is a part of Saint Luke’s East Hospital conveniently located in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. 

A part of Saint Luke’s Health System, Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists has delivered high-quality care for more than 70 years, including the last decade on the Saint Luke’s East Hospital campus. The team diagnoses and treats the full range of orthopaedic conditions with expert and compassionate care.

On his professional journey, Dr. Hellman prioritizes developing an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to the goals and expectations of each patient he cares for. His practice includes muscle sparing anterior hip replacement, minimally invasive total knee and partial knee replacement, hip resurfacing, revision total hip and total knee replacement, hip arthroscopy, open hip surgery, and periacetabular osteotomy.

Educated in the United States, Dr. Hellman graduated with his medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College. He then went on to perform his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center, followed by his fellowship in joint preservation, resurfacing and replacement at Washington University/B-JH/SLCH Consortium.

Trained in cutting edge techniques, he is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.

Holding fellowship status, Dr. Hellman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (FAAOS) and a Fellow of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (FAAHKS). 

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

With research interests focusing on complex disorders of the hip and knee, Dr. Hellman has published over 50 research articles and book chapters and has presented over 40 abstracts at national and international conferences. His belief is that a strong foundation in evidence-based medicine is the optimal way to provide the highest quality of care to every patient.
