Following this, he embarked on an internship in internal medicine at the University of Miami/Jackson Health System from 1970 to 1971.
Driven by a commitment to further specialize, Dr. Smith Jr. pursued his residency in internal medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science (Rochester) from 1973 to 1975. Building upon this foundation, he went on to complete a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the said establishment from 1975 to 1976. His dedication to advancing his expertise continued with a subsequent fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of South Florida Morsani from 1976 to 1977.
A Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), Dr. Smith Jr. is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).
