  • I want to try a natural medical treatment, should I see a naturopath physician?

Yes definitely. But, depending on where you are that phrase may mean different things. Look for a Naturopathic Doctor or Physician who holds a license to practice medicine. Not every state licenses Naturopathic Doctors. Look for one who holds a license, even if it is in a different state. Vermont, Oregon, Arizona and Washington NDs get to use their full scope of practice therefore they stay up on a larger swath of medical innovation. READ MORE

  • Are there any herbs that can treat anxiety?

Absolutely! It is important to know what you have tried in the past, including pharmaceuticals, to determine the best direction to start with herbs. For example, if I have had a patient who used Xanax with great success I will start with a much different herbal protocol than if they had tried Xanax and found it to be ineffective. There are so many different herbs that work on different mechanisms of anxiety that it helps to narrow down the field. READ MORE

Yes, absolutely. But, they are not shortcuts. • I am on a naturopathic weight loss program and passing a lot of gas. Is it normal?

There is no single naturopathic weight loss program. If a naturopathic doctor prescribed it to you, I’d advise that you ask them if this is normal. If it was not prescribed for you specifically by a naturopathic doctor then I would suggest finding one, explaining in detail what you are doing so that they can determine if there is something unexpected happening with your digestion. • I have a typical sinus allergy. How can naturopathy help?

Yes. I use a combination of supplements and antihistamines when the allergy season is already started, but the best option is starting preventative herbs a few months before the worst of the season. • How is diarrhea treated with natural medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is individualized medicine. There are acute treatments for diarrhea that happens as a result of food poisoning or a short term infectious agent. There are different treatments for chronic diarrhea- IBS and IBD. There are so many options for treatment that there simply isn’t enough room here to list a third of them. I am biased, by the many patients I have treated, that it is extremely advisable. I do not shy away from using pharmaceuticals when necessary, but with diarrhea it is rarely necessary. READ MORE

  • How should I prepare my body for a naturopathy detox?

There is no such thing as a “naturopathic detox treatment.” A naturopathic doctor may prescribe some herbs, supplements, lifestyle and dietary changes to help support your body’s natural detoxification processes. That is the preparation for your body. Make sure that the doctor you are working with has graduated from an accredited naturopathic medical school and carries a license to practice medicine. In the United States, not all states license naturopathic doctors, but the reputable doctors carry a license in another state if they live in a pre-licensed state. READ MORE
