Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Jonathan Skarie, who serves the Mansfield, Ohio area at his private practice, Ohio Eye Associates. Dr. Skarie earned a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, graduating with honors. He then earned his MD and PhD degrees at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, with a research focus on glaucoma genetics. He stayed in Milwaukee to complete an Internship year at St Luke’s Medical Center and his ophthalmology residency at the Medical College of WI. Additionally, Dr. Skarie completed clinical and research fellowships in glaucoma at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He secured a prestigious HEED Fellowship during this time, focusing his research on optic nerve regeneration. Prior to his current position, Dr. Skarie worked at UW-Madison and served as a glaucoma and cataract specialist and educator, as well as a glaucoma research scientist. Presently, he holds a Visiting Scientist appointment at the Cole Eye Center at The Cleveland Clinic where he is continuing to pursue his interests in glaucoma basic science and ophthalmology education. Dr. Skarie continues to collaborate with geneticists at Case Western Reserve University to better understand genetic risk factors for glaucoma. To stay current with his field, Dr. Skarie maintains professional memberships in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Glaucoma Society and Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He has published his research in prestigious medical journals, including Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science. Throughout his career, he has received many honors and accolades, including the Jessica Lin Award for Clinical Excellence. Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery that deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eyeball and orbit. An ophthalmologist is a specialist in medical and surgical eye disease. Eye surgery, also known as ocular surgery, is surgery performed on the eye or its adnexa by an ophthalmologist.The eye is a fragile organ, and requires extreme care before, during, and after a surgical procedure.
