Will my mother regain her speech after her stroke?
Regaining the ability to speak after a stroke varies for every individual. Patients can regain their speech back however, every case is different. Some patients regain it at a slower pace than others. Factors to keep in mind are the age of the stroke patient, how severely the stroke impacted them and what part of the brain was impacted from the stroke. If your mother's speech intelligibility was impacted the muscles that are used to speak may have been affected. Your mother may benefit from retraining the muscles needed for speech production. Errika is a licensed speech-language pathologist and an IAOM-certified orofacial myologist with over 22 years of experience. She provides orofacial myofunctional therapy, as well as speech, language, and feeding therapy to children and adults at her private practice, Family Speech Center in Flushing and Astoria, New York. There, she strives to help children and adults unlock the skills to successful relationships with family, friends, and co-workers.
Errika has extensive experience in the treatment of orofacial myofunctional disorders, swallowing difficulties, apraxia, dysarthria, muscle-based oral motor difficulties impacting feeding, articulation disorders, and receptive-expressive language disorders. Additionally, she has served as a provider to many agencies as well as public and private schools. Errika serves as a supervisor and mentor for graduate students from various universities.
Errika is a member of the American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology, the International Association of Orofacial Myology, the New York State Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and the Long Island Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Errika earned her Bachelor of Science degree in speech-language pathology from St. John’s University. She then went on to earn her Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology from Southern Illinois University.
