He is licensed to practice in Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Kansas, Ohio, and California. Dr. Meagher is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). Dr. Meagher has contributed to 22 publications and presentations in the field of pediatric medicine. He chose his specialty because he has a desire to help children and families through surgical problems. He chose to work at Dayton Children’s because it is a friendly and caring environment.

Dr. Meagher Jr. received his medical degree in 1973 at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. After a general surgery residency at the same teaching venue (1978), he completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (1978 - 1979) and a second fellowship in pediatric surgery at The Children's Hospital in Denver, Colorado (1979 - 1980). Prior to his medical degree, Dr. Meagher Jr. earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology/Zoology from the University of Kansas in 1970.

The doctor attained board certification in general surgery and pediatric surgery through the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. 

Pediatric surgery is a subspecialty of surgery involving the surgery of fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.

Prior to his current endeavors, Dr. Meagher Jr. was an Attending Pediatric Surgeon at The Children's Hospital in Denver, Colorado (1980 - 1999) as well as a Trauma Medical Director at Children's Hospital Central California (1999 - 2007).

Outside his professional commitments, Dr. Meagher enjoys USA swimming and has served as a national championships official. He also enjoys mountaineering, golf, and traveling.
