A 1972 graduate of the University of Damascus, Faculty of Medicine in Syria, Dr. Al-Khalil relocated to the United States to complete his training. He performed his internship at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and his residency in pediatrics at the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo. Wanting to further his education, he completed his fellowships in pediatric hematology-oncology at the University of Connecticut and Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease. More specifically, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist treats children and teens from birth through young adulthood.
