Dr. Shupe is a leading orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician who welcomes patients at UT Physicians Orthopedics at Ironman Sports Medicine Institute at both the Memorial City and the Sugar Land locations. Moreover, he is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth.
Dr. Schupe maintains a clinical interest in arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery with a focus on shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle surgery. He utilizes advanced techniques for minimally invasive surgery and reconstructive treatments, as well as nonsurgical management and rehabilitation.
As a sports medicine physician, his experience encompasses many years of treating high school, collegiate, professional, and recreational athletes. “He has worked with the Houston Texans, Houston Rockets, Houston Astros, Houston Dynamo, and the athletic teams at the University of Houston. Dr. Shupe is the team physician for George Ranch High School in Richmond, TX and participates in the care of athletes at other local high schools”, states the official website of UTHealth.
Dr. Schupe attended the George Washington University School of Medical and Health Sciences in Washington, DC, and acquired his medical degree in 2003. He completed his internship and orthopedic surgery residency at the Naval Medical Center (2003-2011). Following his internship, Dr. Shupe served as a naval flight surgeon in Beaufort, SC,. He then served as a staff orthopaedic surgeon at the US Naval Hospital Yokosuka Japan and Naval Hospital Jacksonville FL. He then completed an additional fellowship year of specialty training in orthopaedic sports medicine at UTHealth where he was chosen as the administrative fellow.
Subsequent to his training, Dr. Schupe attained board certification in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons. It is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Orthopaedic surgery or orthopaedics, is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases and congenital disorders.
