Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Chirag D. Gandhi, who serves patients in Valhalla, New York.

As one of the few dual-trained neurosurgeons in the country, Dr. Gandhi has expertise in both cerebrovascular surgery and minimally-invasive endovascular neurosurgery. In his line of work, his special clinical interests include brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, intracranial and carotid atherosclerosis and stenosis, stroke, epistaxis, as well as vascular tumors of the brain and spinal cord. 

At present, he serves as Director of Neurovascular Surgery and Program Director of the Neurosurgery Residency and the Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology Fellowship at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. The care that he provides is based on collaboration with other specialists, as well as through joint decision-making with patients and families.

Westchester Medical Center is an 895-bed regional medical system that serves New York’s Hudson Valley region and beyond. It encompasses a regional academic medical center, children’s hospital, community hospital, two inpatient behavioral health centers, home care, and numerous outpatient health and related services that serve as a lifeline to the more than 3.5 million people.

Alongside his current roles, Dr. Gandhi serves as Professor and Vice-Chairman of Neurosurgery at New York Medical College. He is an active member and leader in the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, AANS/CNS Cerebrovascular Section, the American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association, the Neurosurgical Society of America, as well as the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery. He is also a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

On his path towards becoming a doctor, he earned his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He then went on to complete his internship within the Department of Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center, followed by his residency within the Department of Neurosurgery at the same educational venue. Thereafter, he completed his fellowships in diagnostic neuroradiology and neurointerventional surgery within the Department of Radiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

A well-recognized leader in the field with over 150 research publications, books, and national appearances, Dr. Gandhi is board-certified in neurological surgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, whose primary purposes are to conduct examinations of candidates who voluntarily seek certification and to issue certificates to those who meet the requirements of the board and satisfactorily complete its examinations. His various honors include Alpha Omega Alpha and the BrainLab Outstanding Clinical Study Award. 

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, cervical and lumbar disc disease, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.
