From Lab to Bedside: A Renowned Oncologist’s Pioneering Work in Cancer Research and Patient Well-Being

Dr. Channing J. Paller stands at the forefront of the medical oncology field, embodying a tireless dedication to pioneering research and compassionate patient care. With a focus on urological cancers, including prostate, bladder, kidney, and testicular cancer, her profound expertise and empathetic approach have significantly impacted the lives of countless patients.

Currently holding the position of Director of Prostate Cancer Clinical Research at The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Paller also serves as an Associate Professor of Oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her clinical practice is based at the Prostate Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinic at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., where she continues to make a positive difference in the lives of her patients.

As a committed advocate for clinical research, Dr. Paller also fulfills the role of Associate Director of Oncology for The Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network, furthering the reach and impact of innovative cancer research within the community.

A key figure in the fight against prostate cancer, Dr. Paller plays a pivotal role on the Executive Committee for the DOD-funded Prostate Cancer Clinical Trial Consortium. She is also the co-Principal Investigator for the PROMISE registry, offering genetic testing and counseling services to 5000 men with prostate cancer in the United States. This initiative not only provides crucial support to men with genetic mutations but also offers educational resources and clinical trial opportunities through Prostatecancerpromise.org. 

Dr. Paller’s journey to becoming a distinguished oncologist began with her Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School in 2005, followed by a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Her commitment to excellence led her to seek diverse experiences, including rotations at esteemed institutions such as the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program and the Food and Drug Administration, where she honed her skills in investigational drug assessment and regulatory science.

Board certified in medical oncology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Paller’s dedication to advancing cancer care standards is evident in her active membership in prestigious organizations such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research. Through her involvement, she remains at the forefront of oncology advancements, continuously striving to enhance patient outcomes and elevate the quality of care provided.

In 2016, Dr. Paller was honored as one of only five oncologists nationwide to receive the prestigious NCI Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award, a testament to her exceptional potential in shaping the future of cancer care. 

Prior to this, her groundbreaking contributions were acknowledged with the 2015 Passano Clinician Scientist Award, celebrating her early-stage research that has already begun to leave an indelible mark on the scientific community. Dr. Paller’s remarkable achievements were further underscored by prestigious accolades such as the 2011-2012 Young Investigator Award by the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the 2011-12 Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Paul Carbone Award, highlighting her promise as a trailblazer in the field. She has received grant funding from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, Prostate Cancer Foundation, and multiple other foundations.

Most recently, Dr. Paller has collaborated with VA leadership to establish PROFOUND-VET, a network dedicated to leveraging data to enhance care guidelines and services for Veterans. Through her unwavering commitment to advancing oncology research and patient care, she continues to make a lasting impact on the field of medical oncology.
