Get to know Endocrinologist Dr. Surya Narayan Mulukutla, who serves patients throughout the State of Texas.

An established endocrinologist, Dr. Mulukutla joined DHR Health in 2017, tending to patients at the DHR Health Diabetes and Endocrinology Institute in Edinburg, Weslaco, and Brownsville, Texas. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hormone disorders and diabetes across the age spectrum.

Dr. Mulukutla’s professional journey began in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he grew up. He then moved to Houston to become a Rice University / Baylor College of Medicine Medical Scholar. After receiving his medical degree, he stayed at Baylor College of Medicine to complete his residency training in both internal medicine and pediatrics, as well as dual fellowship training in both pediatric and adult endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism.

His dual fellowship training allowed him to spend time with the nation’s experts learning how to treat a variety of conditions ranging from pediatric thyroid disorders at Texas Children’s Hospital to endocrine cancers at MD Anderson Cancer Center.  During this time, he received commendations for clinical excellence as well as scholarly contributions from Baylor College of Medicine and the Endocrine Society.

As a testament of his continued education, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine, adult endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism & pediatric endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Moreover, he is board-certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Playing an important role in educating medical students, physicians, and other healthcare providers about diabetes and endocrinology, Dr. Mulukutla serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the UT Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine.

Achieving fellowship status, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP), a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), and a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE).

Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus, as well as adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid disorders, among others.

Throughout his extensive career, Dr. Mulukutla has published articles in leading medical journals about diabetes and endocrinology.
