Get to know Internist Dr. George F. Geils, Jr., who serves the population of Charleston, South Carolina at several local hospitals, including Roper Hospital and Bon Secours St Francis Hospital. Currently, Dr. Geils treats patients out of the offices of Charleston Hematology Oncology Associates. Additionally, he is affiliated with Roper Hospital and Bon Secours St Francis Hospital. Dr. Geils is also the Medical Director for the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program for Roper St. Francis Healthcare. Imagine a cancer center where eight hematologists and oncologists come together, with over 100 years of combined experience, and you have Charleston Hematology Oncology Associates (CHOA). This dedicated practice, located in a state-of-the-art facility in the Downtown Charleston, West Ashley, and Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina area, focuses on diagnosing and treating cancers of all kinds. Dr. Geils serves as the Chairman of The Roper St. Frances Institutional Review Board, Chairman of the Roper St. Francis Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and Member of the Roper Medical Executive Committee. He also is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, International Society of Hematotherapy and Graft Engineering, American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, American Society of Hematology, and American Society of Clinical Oncology, showcasing his dedication to working at both the local and state levels of organizations relating to his field. His publications include the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the Journal of Hematotherapy. His continuing research is focused on allogeneic stem cell transplantation, alloimmune recovery, and cell-mediated graft-versus disease effect. Dr. Geils is a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina. He did his residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and his fellowship at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he focused on Hematology, Medical Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation. He is certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has stood for the highest standard in internal medicine and its 20 subspecialties. Certification has meant that internists have demonstrated – to their peers and to the public – that they have the clinical judgment, skills and attitudes essential for the delivery of excellent patient care. Internal Medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Internists are skilled in the management of patients who have undifferentiated or multi-system disease processes.
