Get to know Medical Oncologist Dr. Louise Catherine Connell, who serves patients in Manhattan, New York.

Dr. Connell is an established medical oncologist seeing patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Rockefeller Outpatient Pavilion in Manhattan, New York. 

Her practice is dedicated to caring for people with gastrointestinal cancers, including colon cancer, rectal cancer, and appendiceal cancer. She also has expertise in treating hepatobiliary cancers. She specializes in systemic chemotherapy, where the treatment circulates throughout the body, and regional chemotherapy, meaning the drug is delivered directly to the liver or abdomen.

As a medical student unsure of the exact path her career would take, Dr. Connell’s family was impacted by cancer. The journey that followed influenced her both in terms of her career choices and goals, and also how she cares for patients today. Her experience being on the other side of the consultation desk helped her to understand and appreciate what patients and their families go through after receiving a cancer diagnosis.

“When caring for my patients, I aim to provide the best evidence-based treatments and to surround them with compassion. I place a great deal of emphasis on communication to help reduce their distress and maximize their quality of life” expressed the doctor.

Pertaining to her educational pursuits, Dr. Connell graduated with her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB, BCh) degree, Bachelor of the Obstetric Art (BAO) degree, and Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSc) degree from the University College Cork in Ireland. She then went on to complete her residency in internal medicine and her fellowship in medical oncology at the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. Upon relocating to the United States, she completed an additional fellowship in advanced oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Passionate about her profession, she is board-certified in medical oncology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

An avid researcher, the goal of Dr. Connell’s research is to develop new, more-personalized therapies for people with colorectal and hepatobiliary cancers. She is working to develop immunotherapy and molecular-based approaches to effectively treat these diseases, and has a particular interest in advancing her understanding of colorectal cancers at the molecular level so that she can learn how and why they grow and spread.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.

Among her most notable achievements, Dr. Connell has been the recipient of the Irish Society of Medical Oncology Scholarship Award (2013), Ainsworth Scholarship (2014), and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Young Investigator Award (2016).
